What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

The lymphatic system is a vital part of the body's immune system and works to protect against infection and disease.  When not functioning properly, it can have significant implications for overall health and well-being, affecting immune function, fluid balance, and tissue health.

Below are some of the most common signs that the Lymphatic System is impaired:

Edema: The accumulation of fluid in tissues, causing swelling. This occurs because the lymphatic system is unable to properly drain excess interstitial fluid from the tissues, leading to fluid build-up and swelling, especially in places like the feet and ankles.

Weakened Immune Response: Since the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in the body's immune response, impairment can weaken the immune system's ability to fight infections and diseases. This can make individuals more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

Lymphedema: This is a specific type of edema that occurs when there is a blockage or damage to the lymphatic vessels, preventing proper drainage of lymph fluid. Lymphedema most commonly affects the arms or legs and can result from conditions such as surgery, radiation therapy, infection, or trauma.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialised massage technique that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system to remove excess fluid and waste products from the body. It involves gentle, rhythmic movements performed by a trained therapist to encourage the flow of lymph fluid through the lymphatic vessels and into the lymph nodes.  This helps to remove excess fluid, toxins, and metabolic waste from the body's tissues, reducing swelling, improving circulation, and supporting the immune system.

Lymphatic drainage massage can often be used in post-surgical recovery (especially after procedures involving lymph node removal) helping with detoxification, and immune support.

It also helps to support the immune system and helps with the treatment of auto-immune conditions.
